Color, Composition,And Stylein Food Photography
The first element of food photography I am drawn to when capturing food art is the colors. What colors
portray the form of spring essence? What emotions do they evoke? For me, I am often drawn to the
shades and hues of purple. When I think of spring, the first thing that pops into my head is a lilac flower.
Lilacs come in various shades of purple making them my focal prop in any spring photo. In this photo,
lilacs became my main prop complimenting and highlighting the cake.
The second element of food photography I am drawn to is composition. Composition plays a huge role in
food photography and brings a balanced elegance to any scene. I like to play with shapes and geometry
to guide the viewer’s eye to the main subject. The cake is centrally placed on a silver platter, reflecting
the light in a way that highlights the texture of the cake. The two slices of cake on matching china plates
complete the form of repetition in shape and color. All these details lead back to the highlight of the
photo, the cake.

confections, I like to incorporate three main elements for quality photos.he third element that I am drawn to is style. In food photography, style can tell a story on its own. I find
that styles often showcase the photographer in a more personal way. You get a glimpse of what they are
passionate about capturing. For me, that is elegantly blending rustic and modern elements in an earthy
setting. In this photo, the rough gray stone gives it a natural earthy backdrop that contrasts beautifully
with the elements of the cake and platter. The lilacs add to the style in a natural earthy way, while
complimenting the main subject, the cake.
