Photographing the Taste of Childhood
he entire picture series is inspired by summers spent with my grandmother. I use a dominant colour for the tablecloth, and I enhance my grandmother’s look with small crocheted blankets that she made. The multiple vibrant colours and variety of props allow me to create an eclectic look, which is typical of most grandmas’ homes.
This picture is all about storytelling. You can see the variety and amount of props. I can use them to create a scene where the cookies are stored in the decorative tin after being filled and sugared. A large part of the table is visible, with the focus on the round cookie.
n this picture, I focus on the process of sugaring. There are only few props and the flowers are on the edge of the picture. To make the small sugar spots more visible, I added a black substance behind the main subject. I only used natural light, which was coming from the side of the object (see the behind-the-scenes picture).
The last picture only shows part of the table where I demonstrate the process. There are a few ready-made biscuits and some waiting for the filling. There are plates and jam glasses on the edges. The props help me convey the atmosphere to the audience.
